Frosty on the blizzard forum made  a good post in this thread that I want to share:

“I believe there are two main reasons why people enjoy Overwatch: gameplay and lore. Blizzard is not doing too well in both departments. The people who enjoy the game for its gameplay are suffering because of the way PTR is handled, refusal to listen to feedback, inability to deal with harassment on console, and the rampant presence of cheaters, among others. Those who enjoy the lore are suffering because of how terribly written the story and character relationships are. I will be talking about the story as I’m more of a lore kind of guy.

For starters, yes, it is Blizzard’s story and they can do what they wish. But it is also Blizzard’s poorly written, poorly managed story. The cinematics are predictable, the inconsistencies are rampant, and the most compelling dynamics in the lore are not being developed to their full potential. And Michael Chu is not doing the game any favours.

You are writing and generating content for an audience. Your audience is your business. Focusing on some unfathomable, shoehorned romance that no one cares about (and I really mean that– I had never even heard of G*ncy that’s how lacking they are in chemistry, not to mention how gross, illogical, and unethical it is) while stories that are actually engaging take a backseat (further developing D.Va’s character for example, or focusing on the master-student relationship between Genji and Zenyatta.) What Chu is doing is uninteresting and is pure wish-fulfillment. There are 23 amazing characters in the game… I just can’t wrap my head around his fascination with Genji, who, at this point, has become a laughing stock despite having so much potential as a character. And at the same time, for the love of God, don’t include character romances in the game.

The ‘fandom’ is divided already as it is, and canonizing these ‘ships’ now will only make the tension worse. Fans have already formed attachments to these characters, which in writing is exactly what you want. Don’t strip that away. Keep romance separate from the game and leave it to the shippers. It’s cringe-worthy and out of place. Everyone else is writing fanfiction to satisfy themselves and they don’t bother anyone, why can’t you do that instead of ruin it for your audience? It’s downright embarrassing. Write a good story instead of self-inserting yourself. You have wattpad for that.
