So american wizards play grifball
i was just talking about this the other day, it’d be a lot more adaptable to muggle equipment than quidditch. play it on a basketball court with rollerblades, or a hockey court with ice skates. use a timer and alarm system for managing when the ball explodes. it’d be better if the ball always exploded in the same amount of time— possibly shorter increments each round— instead of at random, so that players could shift strategies depending on both the proximity of the ball to the goal and the imminence of the explosion.
as for the ball, the game play would probably be pretty different depending on if you were using a basketball, a bowling ball, or a beach ball. all three present interesting challenges. personally i think beachball would be the most fun, because you could bounce it higher than opponents could grab it, but not throw it faster than opponents could grab it, so control of the ball could change very quickly. a bowling ball couldn’t be thrown at all without seriously fucking people up, which is more authentically wizardy, and would make the game very serious— probably more about wrestling for control of it than any voluntary passing. a basketball could be easily bounced and thrown and encourage players to spread out and use more of the court at once. i guess you could also use a tennis ball if you wanted things to get real crazy.
you could also use 10 different kinds of balls, a different one for each round, especially on a paved court with rollerblades rather than on ice. say, basketball, american football, 15lb bowling ball, 8lb bowling ball, croquet ball, golf ball, tennis ball, 15″ beach ball, 30″ beach ball, and a potato. that’s goofy enough to be very wizardy, and would also make each round have a different style of play.
anyway i would really love to try playing quodpot some time, i think it’d be a lot more fun than quidditch, and it would be interesting to see what strategies and conventions evolve. maybe this summer i can try to get a team of athletic nerds together.
My question is, is it still played on broomstick or is it on foot? Or something else entirely? I like the rollerskates plan.
I imagine it can be played both ways, on broomstick and on foot. Broomsticks are probably the more “official” way to play (maybe for actual games or tournaments), but on foot is probably how most people are introduced to Quodpot at first, as a “pick up” game to play in the street with your friends.
