Because we’re not taught to think like this in schools. It’s all memorization, we’re not taught about patterns with numbers.
Have you ever seen the finger-trick with this, people with ten fingers? Think about what four times nine is. Put down your fourth finger. You have three fingers before and six fingers after- thirty-six. It works up to 90 (nine fingers before, no fingers after).
