I need to know the story behind this.
same wth
Well, after I died (”died”) there wasn’t really any next of kin to take all my stuff and Peggy very understandably did not want my random footlocker full of smelly clothes, so it went to General Philips, who stashed it somewhere, and then after the war I guess the Smithsonian eventually worked out that it’d be Historical Of Them to have it, so it went to the Smithsonian. Where apparently they used my regular dress uniform for several years in the “Historical Uniforms” exhibit, not because it was MY uniform but just because it was A uniform and in pretty good condition.
So imagine my surprise when I go to the Smithsonian – this was before they put up an exhibit about me – and there in the historical uniforms case is a pair of underwear saying “Underwear belonging to Captain Steven Grant Rogers, courtesy General Chester Phillips”. He’d probably say it serves me right for being two soldiers’ worth of trouble.
When I pointed it out and asked ‘em if maybe they could even just not make a point of saying it was mine, they got all flustered. But someone came up with the idea that since they did have all this stuff they should do a real proper Captain America exhibit, which meant they still had to keep my shorts, which are now presented to the public as my shorts, on their own little stand and everything. So that backfired.
I understand the postcard of my shorts is one of the best sellers in the gift shop. I think probably because Clint sends me like at least one a week.
