things dragon age could be doing with blood magic:
- revolutionizing healing craft in thedas through the manipulation of a person’s blood (keeping ppl from bleeding out, restarting a heart that stops, finding and loosening blood clots, etc.)
- foolproof pregnancy prevention through the stoppage of menstrual cycles
- divining a person’s future to protect them from accidents or life-threatening injuries
- helping parents find children and other loved ones who are lost/abducted through the use of blood-based kinship spells
- blood leaves magical residue on murderers which particularly skilled blood mages are able to trace or at least use to corroborate evidence and convict criminals
- protecting oneself or others from harassment/stalkers through the use of blood-based sigils; protecting oneself from blood-based kinship spells when fleeing from abusive homes
things dragon age actually does with blood magic:
- lmfao congrats on your terrible life choices, you’re either an idiot or an asshole and you and/or everyone you love is dead
That’s not how blood magic works though.
- Manipulating someone’s blood to stop them from bleeding out, keeping blood flow to their heart, loosing blood clots, other medical reasons, etc.
Example: Blood Control (Ability): The blood mage forcibly controls the target’s blood.
- Protect them from life-threatening injury/disease.
Example: Responsible Blood Magic (Codex): Seraphinian offered his own blood to cure Crescens of her wasting disease, and Crescens lived a long life.
- Helping find loved ones, also corroborate evidence (DNA)
Example: Chantry Phylacteries: A vial filled with blood to track down Circle Mages.
- Protecting oneself or others
Example: An old Ferelden group’s mage used blood sigils to protect their people (From the Comics)
Like some of the others above seem to be circumstantial or just plain headcanon, but some of it is entirely possible canonically and what isn’t is at least plausible.
Also some other things mentioned that Blood Magic can ultimately do Canonically:
- Can heal Crops (Comic)
- Can affect Tree Sap (Tabletop)
- Has been used to heal in other ways, beside the one above (though not specified) (Fenris and other small mentions)
- Can Cleanse (Merrill)
- Can replace Mana/Lyrium Potions for ANY spell (Tabletop and In-Game)
- Can Repair Broken Objects (Comic)
- Potentially Help With Night Terrors and Sleep/Dream-Related Problems (They can use blood magic to go into dreams and mess it up, but fixing it should be possible too)
- Determine The Clarity of Blood, as in if someone is possessed or not (Merrill)
- Containment (Hawke’s Father, Malcolm as seen with Corypheus)
- May Be Able to Combat The Taint? (The Last Flight)
