okay, but i’m starting to think that lance’s story arc will be a big one. Because all of his insecurities are kind of piling up and adding up for season 3.
because in season 1 he had first showed that he was homesick, and that was a big deal at the time he was kind of the only one who really expressed that they wanted to go home really badly. He almost cried.
and then this season kinda heightened that.
first when he is with the mermaids they tell him he is their saviour and he doesn’t even believe them
he questions them and looks distraught like he can’t even believe they would see him as someone who could save them by himself.
and even here it gets worse, he clearly doesn’t see the worth that he has and it shocks him and even frightens him to meet people who think he can help and actually do things
THEN he thinks that Keith is trying to steal his lion, and is extra dramatic and even tells Keith that him and blue are happy together, and that i think was him being afraid of being replaced.
face mask and towel aside lance is almost hostile here he is clearly upset
then… he gets really upset that shiro chooses to take kieth on a mission over him.
in this scene he is clearly upset and his expression is almost sad at first when shiro chooses keith and he fights shiro on it despite how he has always seen him as a leader who knew what was best
he clearly just wants to be appreciated, and acknowledged by shiro and the rest of the team as a strong member and even if they do he clearly doesn’t see it
AND FINALLY TO TOP IT ALL OFF
THIS LOVELY SCENE RIGHT HERE
HE LITERALLY HAD JUST BOASTED ABOUT THE WHOLE TEAM, EVEN KEITH BUT HE REALLY DOESNT HAVE MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HIMSELF
HE EVEN WONDERS IF THE TEAM WOULD KEEP HIM AROUND IF HE WASN’T USEFUL, SO CLEARLY HE HAS ISSUES ACCEPTING HIS WORTH
so while yeah lance didn’t have much of a roll in this season there is alot of hope for next season. this is clearly a buildup, because as the seasons progress it’s getting worse, and that means that this may even start to effect the team.
when lance does get his full fledged character arch like keith did this season and shiro it will be very large and i think it will be very interesting to see how this pans out. LANCE WILL GET THE LIME LIGHT HE DESERVES AND I THINK THATS SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO!!
To add on to this lovely analysis, I can whole-heartedly agree that Lance will probably play a big part of season 3. Look at where this season has ended.
And before I go any further, even though I tagged it as such I shall repeat it, SPOILER ALERT! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED!
Ahem, back to the topic. The whole point of this season was to build up Keith’s arc of molding him into the temporary leader of Voltron for season 3. In fact, season 3 seems to be going very much in the direction of the original Voltron season where Keith was the one to pilot the Black Lion and lead.
Of course I dearly hope that Shiro returns by the end of the season, but this sets up a fresh start to have to literally rebuild the team and the bonds of the paladins to this new dilemma. Because let’s face it, there will be one paladin that will be most opposed against Keith leading.
Lance.
He already has been set up to feel extremely insecure towards Keith and season 2 has only added to it (Shiro choosing Keith over Lance for a mission, Lance secretly scared the Blue Lion would prefer Keith (probably after hearing about Keith being able to pilot Black), and even Allura starting to bond more with Keith than she ever did with Lance despite all of his attempts).
And hearing the Shiro specifically chose Keith to lead and having the Black Lion confirm it will probably drive a big rift between Keith and Lance despite all their previous bonding.
And, what if the Voltron team goes even further and makes Lance have to pilot the Red Lion like he did in all the previous series? Lance, after all, is the most impulsive after Keith. Allura might be the one to suggest this and then add that she herself pilot Blue quoting “After all the Blue Lion is the most accepting of the lions”.
If this happens, I can easily see Lance seeing himself as just a secondhand paladin to the Red Lion. He’s just Keith’s replacement once again just like in the garrison and he’s away from Blue, the one thing that saw worth in him though now he even doubts it since ‘Look! Allura’s flying Blue like a pro! Guess there wasn’t really anything special about Lance after all”
I can see a big arc for Lance is him realizing that he’s not just Keith’s shadow but has worth and the potential to lead Voltron as well. And I hope Keith will be able to show Lance that he trusts his rival to be his right hand man for Voltron.
So yeah, there’s my two cents. So hold tight Lance fans- I think season 3 will bring some great stuff for our favorite Cuban boy.
